"5.1 Plus 5" - FDS Surround Sound for DVD Home Theater
FDS LABS' "5.1 Plus 5" mastering for DVD can add five phantoms (apparent sound sources) between each speaker in the surround field. This new DVD audio extraction system benefits content providers by eliminating the need to remix from Left/Right stereo motion picture soundtracks. It is a new, cost-effective way to deliver better home theater surround sound for DVD, even when the source is in stereo or mono. The FDS Labs process uses no phase shifting to attain stereo in the front or rear channels. Rather, the fingerprinting process allows for true, discrete 5.1 surround. In addition, no filtering is used for the subwoofer, giving a true low-frequency experience. The FDS process yields true stereo in the rears, along with a center "phantom" (apparent sound source) between the speakers. Phantoms are also produced between the left front and left rear, right front and right rear, left and center, and right and center (see illustration). All of this from a stereo mix, without using phase characteristics that can degrade the sound. The process actually puts you "in the center," without the need to sit in the "sweet spot" to enjoy the sound. You will experience a clarity and surround dimension that is akin to being part of the movie. Click here to see some of our recent projects.
